In Tamil Nadu, more than two lakh fishermen from six districts have resorted to strike from last night urging retrieval of their fishing boats from Sri Lanka. The fishermen went on hunger strike on Republic Day at Nagapattinam. The fishermen association said that there was no response from the government and they are forced to resort to strike.
Tamil fishermen have started strike urging the release of 75 fishing boats detained by Sri Lanka. The fishermen from Nagapattinam, Ramanathapuram, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Puducherry and Karaikal
have decided not to venture out into the sea.
The fishermen say that their livelihood is badly affected as their fishing boats are lying idle in Lanka. They pointed out that 18 fishing boats detained by Sri Lanka have been completely damaged.
The fishermen went on hunger strike in protest and then announced that they are going for strike till Friday. Sri Lanka had released 102 Tamil fishermen lodged in Lankan jails as good will gesture last week. However the fishing boats of Tamil fishermen were not released as deterrent measure.
