In Tamil Nadu, State
Ministers RB Udayakumar and Rajendra Balaji gave 2 lakh rupees compensation
each to the families of eight persons killed in the fire accident in Sivakasi
in Virudhunagar district.
Eight persons including six women were killed yesterday as fire spread into medical scan centre when firecrackers were being offloaded to godown from a mini lorry in Sivakasi. District Collector Sivagnanam said that the death was only due to suffocation as thick fumes engulfed the scan centre.
The
tragedy in
medical scan centre in Sivakasi has raised questions about precautionary
measures made in shops and scan centres to escape from fire hazard. Police said
that there was only one exit for the scan centre as rooms had sensitive scan
machines. Six staff members and two persons who came for diagnosis were
suffocated to death because of thick smoke.
Police inquiry is being made to find how firecracker godown functioned in a public place and adjacent to medical scan centre. Thirteen persons were saved and are undergoing treatment in Sivakasi government hospital. More than 20 vehicles were damaged in the fire cracker accident.
