Senior BJP leader, Pratima Bhowmik who was elected an MLA from the Dhanpur Legislative Assembly constituency in the recently concluded Tripura Legislative Assembly election yesterday resigned from her seat. Bhowmik's resignation comes just a day ahead of the oath-taking ceremony of the new MLAs to be held today.

Talking to reporters, Ms. Bhowmik, who is the Union Minister of State for Social Justice



and Empowerment said, as per rule, she cannot be an MLA and an MP at the same time. She said her party, the BJP, had asked her to contest from the Dhanpur Assembly seat. Ms. Bhowmik had defeated her nearest rival from CPI (M) Kaushik Chanda. Senior BJP leader Binoy Bhushan Das who took oath as the Pro-tem speaker earlier today said that he has accepted the resignation of Ms. Bhowmik.
