Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Kirodi Lal Meena has claimed that the Centre will implement the Uniform Civil Code in the country before the general elections in 2024. Kirodi Lal Meena’s remark follows a day after he moved for leave to introduce a private member's Bill on the Uniform Civil Code in Rajya Sabha.
Speaking to India Today, Kirodi Lal Meena said, “The BJP will implement the Uniform Civil Code in the country before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.”
The BJP MP said that since the Jan Sangh days, the implementation of UCC has been one of the main planks of the party apart from abrogation of Article 370.
“There should be uniformity of law in the country. It should not be that a Muslim is allowed to marry four times while a Hindu can be jailed for seven years for
marrying second time. I introduced Private Member’s Bill on UCC (in Parliament) after a decision was taken by the party’s leadership in this regard,” Kirodi Lal Meena said.
Meanwhile, the members of the Opposition from Trinamool Congress (TMC), Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), Rashtriya Janata Dadl (RJD), Samajwadi Party (SP), Communist Party of India (CPI), CPI (Marxist), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and Congress had protested against the introduction of the Bill saying, if passed, it will "destroy" the social fabric and unity in diversity that is prevalent in the country.
With the Opposition members seeking withdrawal of the Bill, Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar called for division and the motion for introduction of the Bill was passed with 63 votes in favour and 23 against it.
