Mancherial: Untimely rains have lashed the district and destroyed mango orchards in several parts of the district on Wednesday and Thursday. Power supply was also disrupted in many places. However, the showers brought respite for many who were struggling due to the rising temperatures across the district.
The rains coupled with strong gales wreaked havoc to mango fields, which were at flowering and fruit setting stage. Nearly 15 per cent of the total area of crops was destroyed owing to the unseasonal showers, according to primary assessment of officials. The crops were grown in Thandur, Nennel, Bheemini, Bellampalli, Bheemaram and Chennur mandals.
The farmers, who were reeling under crisis due to poor
yield in the past two years, received a jolt with this. They regretted that they had witnessed huge losses following the untimely rains registered on Wednesday and Thursday. They demanded authorities concerned to carry out survey of the mango fields damaged.
Many trees were uprooted and electricity poles were damaged following untimely rains. However, electricity was restored by evening. Meanwhile, the civic authorities removed the uprooted trees which fell on the roads, which also disrupted the traffic. Also the temperatures came down following the rains bringing respite to people who were struggling to handle the heat wave conditions. The district was recording temperatures hovering around 40 degrees.
