Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has issued an order imposing a ban on the use of plastic in the state from July 15.
"We have issued an order banning the use of plastic across the state from 15th July. No plastic cups, glasses and polythene bags will be allowed. We all must come together to achieve this goal," said Adityanath at an event in Barabanki district.
The Allahabad High Court had directed the state government to issue a notification enforcing a complete ban on the sale of polythene in UP on Nov 18, 2015.
In January 2016, the previous
government in UP decided to implement the order but was not able to execute it fully.
The ban was imposed again in 2017 but the state government failed to implement it effectively on ground.
UP BJP spokesperson Rakesh Tripathi welcomed Yogi Adityanath's move.
"This is being done to save the environment. Our government is committed to make UP a clean and green state. We would be raising public awareness and everyone should come together for (a) better environment," said Tripathi.
Maharashtra has recently imposed a complete ban on plastic.
