Uttar Pradesh DGP issues do's and don'ts for anti-Romeo squad

The new police chief in Uttar Pradesh Sulkhan Singh wants his anti-Romeo squads to be controversy-free. The DGP has issued a list of do's and don'ts to anti-Romeo squads that have previously found themselves in the midst of controversies for harassing couples unnecessarily. In a late evening meet with senior police officials on Tuesday, DGP Singh also made it clear that violence in the name of cow vigilantism should not be allowed.

In a video conference held on Tuesday, DGP Singh issued directives to district level officials to prepare standing instructions clearly indicating the dos and don'ts. The district police chiefs will now be responsible for ensuring that the do's and don'ts are strictly adhered to by policemen who are part of anti-Romeo squads.

The SSP and SPs



have been asked to personally brief their subordinates that the squads do not have to investigate any issue but act only against rowdy elements. Those found indulging in indecent behaviour are not to be arrested, instead, their guardians are to be called and briefed. The anti-Romeo squads have also been asked to record the action they take on camera to avoid any controversy.

While discussing law and order in the state, the DGP maintained that no person indulging in violence in the garb of Gau rakshak should be let off. Reiterating on the need to actively check law and order situation, DGP Singh is said to have told officials that registering FIRs promptly, proper behaviour with the public and presence of police staff in stations are of prime importance.
