A veteran physician committed suicide by jumping in front of a local train in Kolkata allegedly because he was not getting his salary at his Hooghly district hospital, the railway police said on Thursday.
“Rebati Mohan Ghosh, a cardiologist by profession, committed suicide by jumping before a local train in Hooghly district’s Rishra railway station on Wednesday evening,” an officer from Sheoraphuli Government Railway Police said.
According to the staff of Rishra Seva Sadan Hospital, where the cardiologist worked, salaries of many employees and doctors, including Ghosh, were due for several months.
“The doctor was a resident of Dunlop in North 24-Parganas. We are investigating the incident. The body of the deceased has been sent for autopsy,” the officer added.
There have been complaints from doctors across the country over non payment of salaries. Even safety and security of
doctors remains a concern. In fact, over 4,000 resident doctors in Maharashtra have been staying away from work since Monday demanding better security at hospitals in the wake of a string of attacks on their colleagues.
Around 1,200 resident doctors of AIIMS in Delhi turned up for duty at the emergency department on Thursday wearing helmets in support to their striking counterparts in Maharashtra.
“Nobody bothers about resident doctors who were brutally beaten up. Instead of providing security to resident doctors at their workplace, the government is threatening them of deducting their salaries and throwing them out of their hostels,” president of Resident doctors Association of AIIMS Dr Vijay Gurjar said.
“We, the resident doctors at AIIMS, are working with helmets on in the emergency department as we do not want to lose our eyesight and life,” he added expressing solidarity with resident doctors of Maharashtra.
