Veteran CPIM leader and former state secretary of the party Kodiyeri Balakrishnan died in Chennai today. He was 68.

The senior politician was undergoing treatment for cancer.

A five-time MLA from Thalassery in Kannur, Kodiyari Balakrishnan served as



the Home Minister of Kerala in VS Achuthanandan’s cabinet from 2006 to 2011.

Kodiyeri played a major role in leading the CPIM to a second term in 2021. He stepped down due to his failing health recently as the secretary of the Kerala CPM’s state committee from 2015 to 2022.
