Prime Minister Narendra Modi has paid tribute to Babu Jagjivan Ram on his Jayanti today. In a tweet, Mr. Modi said freedom fighter Babu Jagjivan Ram was an ardent advocate of social justice. He said, Babu Jagjivan Ram ji's efforts for the upliftment of socially oppressed and deprived section will always be a source of inspiration for all.

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu has also paid tributes to Babu Jagjivan Ram. Mr. Naidu said Babu Jagjivan Ram was a great freedom fighter, social reformer and astute administrator. Mr.Naidu said, Babu Jagjivan Ram was a visionary leader who served the nation with distinction in various capacities. The Vice President said that Babu Jagjivan Ram will always be remembered for his countless efforts for the uplift of the socially backward and downtrodden.

Jagjivan Ram was one of India's greatest icons who dedicated his life for the betterment of the poor and downtrodden. He was born on 5th April 1908 at Chandwa near Arrah in Bihar.

In 1946, he became the youngest minister in Jawaharlal Nehru's interim government, the first cabinet of India as a Labour Minister and also a member of the Constituent Assembly of India. He went on to serve as a minister with various portfolios for more than forty years.  

Most importantly, he was the Defence Minister of India during the Indo-Pak war of 1971, which resulted in the creation of Bangladesh. He left Congress in 1977 and joined the Janata Party alliance, along with his Congress for Democracy. He later served as the Deputy Prime Minister of India from 1977 to 79.
