Virat Kohli is celebrating his 28th birthday today. He is probably cricket’s biggest icon and is only half way in his career. With over 3000 runs in Test match cricket and over 7000 runs in ODI cricket, he has many against his name and we hope many more to collect.
What has struck us is his consistency. He has an average of over 45 in Tests and over 52 in ODIS. Look at his T20 record and there too the stuff is getting better by the day. An average of over 57 with over 1000 runs. Now there is no doubt that he can adapt to any format and will only get stronger by the day. He has been able to play in his own manner.
At 28, we
know that he has the best years ahead of him. Of course fitness will play a part, as will how he goes about his desire.
India have been simply outstanding as far as their record at home is concerned and Kohli too has played his part there. But there is so much more to come as far as the challenges ahead are concerned. This is where the real man must stand up when India travels abroad.
Kohli is unique but maybe we are looking at a captain who is one of a kind, something Indian cricket has lacked over the years. This is when one way or the other, Indian cricket will find its true calling as far as a unique team is concerned.
