VP Venkaiah Naidu calls for better science communication in regional languages

New Delhi: Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu on Wednesday stressed the need for better science communication in regional languages to reach out to people in their mother tongue as well as to inculcate a scientific temper among them.

Mr. Naidu called for increased efforts to popularise science through books, TV shows and radio broadcasts. The Vice President said this while inaugurating a year-long celebration of birth centenaries of Indian scientists, organised by Vigyan Prasar, Department of Science and Technology, on National Mathematics Day.

The Day is celebrated each year on November 22, marking the birth anniversary of the legendary Indian mathematician, Srinivasa Ramanujan. Recalling the contributions of Ramanujan, Mr Naidu emphasised that it



is our duty to recognise the contributions of Indian scientists and mathematicians to nation-building. The Vice President said, people should recount their inspirational stories to the youngsters and encourage them to take up careers in science.

Mr Naidu also paid tributes to the six scientists whose birth centenary is being celebrated by Vigyan Prasar. They are Har Gobind Khorana, G. N. Ramachandran, Yelavarthy Nayudamma, Balasubramaniam Ramamurthi, G. S. Laddha and Rajeshwari Chatterjee - who were all born in 1922.

Mr Naidu also called for introspection in the field of  Science, Engineering, Technology and Mathematics and suggested that India must aim to become a world leader in scientific research.
