Visakhapatnam: Visakhapatnam police got an alert that an electronic shopping mall in the city is transporting cash from Vizag to Vijayawada. Following this, police intensified vigil and seized currency notes totalling to Rs 1.5 crore hidden in eight washing machines, apart from 30 cell phones.
According to information, a patrol team of airport crime police stopped a van at the NAD intersection on Tuesday night. The van was transporting eight washing machines.
Police got suspicious as generally, washing machines are transported from Vijayawada to Visakhapatnam and not the other way round. They checked the van and found 30 cell phones in a bag.
The van driver could not produce any papers
for the cell phones. On suspicion, police also opened the washing machines. They then discovered Rs 1.5 crore in bundles of Rs 500 notes.
The electronic showroom owner near Diamond Park, who was transporting the currency in washing machines, said the amount is collections made from Dasara sales and the money was being taken to Vijayawada.
Police, however, seized the currency and phones, as the showroom owners did not produce any satisfactory documents.
A case has been registered as per the orders of DCP Naganna.
Police said they have informed the Income Tax department about the seizure of the currency.
