The West Bengal Assembly yesterday unanimously adopted a bill to curb the incidents of lynching.
The Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mr. Partha Chatterjee moved the bill in the house.
Under the provisions of the bill, in case of death due to lynching, those responsible for the incident will be punished with death sentence or rigorous life imprisonment and fine up to five lakh rupees.
In case of serious injury due to lynching, those responsible for it will be punished for life imprisonment with a fine up to three
lakh rupees.
The Director-General of Police will act as a Nodal Officer to monitor and take measure to prevent incidents of lynching besides District level monitoring.
Taking part in the discussions on the bill the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that the government is considering a proposal to give financial compensation to the families of the victim of lynching besides providing a government job.
She urged the Centre to bring a legislation to deal with such incidents.
