In West Bengal, Chief Minister and President of the ruling Trinamool Congress Mamata Banerjee has announced that she will contest in the upcoming State Assembly Election from Nandigram seat in Purba Medinipur. Nandigram is the constituency of Shubhendu Adhikari, who has left the ruling party and ministerial berth and joined BJP recently. It may be recalled that Nandigram was the epicenter of a farmer's agitation and Ms. Banerjee’s fight against a proposed SEZ

propelled TMC into power a decade ago.

On the 14th of March 2007, 14 persons lost their lives in clashes between agitators and police.

In the last Assembly Elections, Ms. Banerjee contested from Bhawanipore's seat in Kolkata. After Shubhendu Adhikari’s exit, it was Mamata Banerjee’s first public meeting at Nandigram on the same day when Mr. Adhikari took part in a rally in south Kolkata, near her constituency.
