West Bengal Govt Rejects Centre’s Claim On Ganga And Teesta Water Sharing Agreement With Bangladesh

The government of West Bengal has rejected Centre’s claims that it has been informed about Ganga and Teesta water sharing agreement with Bangladesh. The chief adviser to the Chief Minister of West Bengal Sh Alapan Bandopadhyay yesterday informed the press at the state secretariat Nabanna that  a 12 member Engineers’ technical committee was formed with one member from West Bengal. He also said that the member from West Bengal had not got the scope and opportunity to represent his views. 

Mr Bandopadhyay said a complete coordination is required while dealing with Indo-Bangladesh river water sharing issues. Ganga water sharing with Bangladesh through Farakka is also related to Teesta  and other rivers’  water sharing issues. He said



there are technical and social dimensions while dealing with Bangladesh regarding water sharing and there should be convergence while policy making between the state and the central governments.

The twelve-member committee was formed in 2023 by the Jal Shakti Ministry. The committee submitted its report on 11th June 2024 before the Central Water Commission. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday regarding the water sharing issue with Bangladesh. Mamata Banerjee has highlighted some points in that letter. The chief adviser has said that  no discussion had taken place between the centre and state government on Indo-Bangladesh water sharing issues.
