The ongoing winter session of the Parliament is coming to close today. Given the disagreement between government and the opposition on the issue of triple talaq bill there is no likelyhood of its passage in this session. Government is likely to make its last-ditch effort to get the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriages) Bill approved by the Upper House, chances of which are grim with the Opposition insisting on sending it a Select Committee for detailed scrutiny.
The BJP government, which is not too keen on sending the bill to the Select Committee, has rejected the Opposition demand. The Lok Sabha had passed the bill last week by a voice vote, rejecting the amendments moved by Opposition members.
The Goods and Services Tax (Compensation to States) Amendment Bill, the
Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Bill, 2013, the Central Road Fund (Amendment) Bill, the State Banks (Repeal and Amendment) Bill, the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill and the Appropriation (No.5) Bill, 2017 are also listed for consideration and passing in the Rajya Sabha.
In the Lok Sabha, the Consumer Protection Bill, 2018 and the New Delhi International Arbitration Centre Bill, 2018 are scheduled to be introduced. Twenty-third Amendment) Bill, the Payment of Gratuity (Amendment) Bill, the National Council for Teacher Education (Amendment) Bill and the Dentists (Amendment) Bill are also listed for consideration and passing in Lok Sabha today.
Private Members’ bills are also scheduled to be introduced in both houses today. The session began on the 15th of last month.
