Swaraj Abhiyan chief and former Aam Aadmi Party leader Yogendra Yadav has been taken into police custody in Tamil Nadu.
He was taken into custody in Tiruvannamalai district of Tamil Nadu for protesting against the Salem eight-lane highway.
Initial reports suggest that he has been taken into custody along with farmers who were also protesting against the expressway.
Describing his detention, Yadav in tweet said the Tamil Nadu Police has detained him and team members in Chengam police station. "We came on the invitation of movement against eight-lane way. We were prevented from going to meet farmers, phones snatched, manhandled and pushed into police van," he said.
In
another tweet about his detention, Yadav claimed that he had spoken to the district collector about "acquisition and complains of police excesses" for the eight-lane highway. "He completely denied any police interference. Within minutes of the phone call police detained us," Yadav said.
Writing about his visit, Yadav said he has gone there to do a fact-finding exercise about "acquisition and allegations of reign of terror by Tamil Nadu Police."
"Farmers have been protesting against land acquisition for Chennai-Selam highway. There are already three roads connecting the two cities," he said.
At present, he has been detained and kept at a marriage hall. The local Superintendent of Police is on the spot.
