The Uttar Pradesh government has banned the operation of illegal slaughterhouses and the sale of meat within 500 meters of religious sites until April 6, in view of the nine-day Chaitra Navratri festival, starting Sunday.
Additionally, a complete ban on animal slaughter and meat sales in the state will be enforced on April 6, the day of Ram Navami.
The Yogi Adityanath government has constituted special district-level committees comprising officials from the police, health, transport, animal husbandry, labour, and food safety departments to ensure strict compliance with the
orders.
Violators will face stringent action under the UP Municipal Corporation Act and the Food Safety Act, the government warned.
Principal Secretary of the Urban Development Department, Amrit Abhijat, has instructed all District Magistrates, Police Commissioners, and Municipal Commissioners to immediately shut down illegal slaughterhouses and enforce the ban on meat sales near religious places.
Referring to orders issued in 2014 and 2017, the Yogi Adityanath government affirmed that illegal animal slaughter and meat sales near religious sites are strictly prohibited.
