Nalgonda: At least 10 persons, including a nine-month-old baby were killed and more than 15 injured when a RTC bus in which they were travelling collided head-on with a truck in Ramannapet mandal of Nalgonda district on Wednesday. The mishap occurred around 3.30 pm when the ill-fated bus was on its way from Bhongir to Nalgonda. The truck transporting books rammed into the bus while negotiating a sharp curve near Indrapalanagar, some 100 kms away from the city, the police said.
Many of the lives of those trapped inside the vehicles were saved by the local people who joined the salvage operations immediately well before the police and ambulances could reach the spot. On receipt of information, Superintendent of police Vikram Duggal reached the spot and personally monitored the rescue operations. “The condition of some of the injured is reported critical,” the SP said. The toll is likely to go up
further.
The injured were shifted to Kamineni Hospital and the government hospitals at Narketpally and Ramannapet. The police had a tough task in removing bodies of the victims trapped in the wreckage of the bus, the rear part of which was left mangled in the impact of the collision. Survivors told police that the truck was moving at an unusual speed and its driver failed to control even after the sighting the bus coming from opposite direction.
The bus driver and nine others sitting behind him were killed instantly. The truck driver fled the scene. Five women were among the dead. “Some of their bodies were trapped beneath the seats and they beyond the scope of identification” the cops said adding that around 45 passengers were traveling in the bus. Eye witnesses have attributed the accident to the negligence of the truck driver. The vehicular traffic on the road was disrupted for over two hours after the incident.
