Chennai: Two coaches of Bangalore - Chennai Mail (train no. 1268) derailed near Basin Bridge early on Wednesday. There were no casualties and no one was injured, claim railway officials. The incident happened around 4.30 am when the train was taking a turn after Basin Bridge railway station. A first AC and second AC coach derailed. "The train moves slowly in this stretch. So we were lucky," the official added.
Railway officials arrived at the spot soon after the incident.
Passengers from the two derailed coaches were shifted to other compartments. The train reached Chennai Central around 5.30 am. Shunting engines were pressed into service. The derailed coaches were placed back on track by 7.45 am and taken away.
However, suburban train services were hit due to the accident. "We had good business as trains were cancelled. Most of the commuters went to Beach Station as trains were cancelled," said Radhakrishnan, an autorickshaw driver near Basin Bridge station.
