New Delhi: The 68-year-old Congress general secretary and 44-year-old TV anchor Amrita Rai married each other in Chennai last month as per a Facebook post by Rai. Journalist and television anchor Amrita Rai on Sunday announced that she got married to Congress leader Digvijaya Singh as per Hindu rites in Chennai last month and desired none of his property or belongings.
"I would like to share with my friends that I and Digvijaya Singh have married in a solemn ceremony, as per Hindu rites. We have also later registered our marriage," Rai said in a Facebook post.
Rai, who works with Rajya Sabha TV, said she married for love.
The former Madhya Pradesh chief minister is currently in the US. Sources close to the 68-year-old leader confirmed the wedding.
"Therefore, I have already requested him to transfer all his property and belongings to his son and daughters. I only want to embark on this new journey with him, working towards a dignified, professional
career," she added.
Rai, 44, said she knew that questions have been raised and would be raised on the age difference between her and the 68-year-old Digvijaya Singh.
"But I sincerely feel that at my age I know what is good for me and I can take my decisions as per my own wisdom. We live in a modern, progressive India, and the constitutional and legal framework has empowered me to decide about my life and my life's choices," she said.
Singh had confirmed his relationship with Rai, 44, in April last year. “She and her husband have already filed a mutual consent divorce case. Once that is decided we would formalise it,” he wrote on Twitter. Rai had also accepted the relationship on Twitter, saying, “I have separated from my husband and we have filed a mutual consent divorce papers. After which I have decided to marry with Digvijaya Singh.”
Singh’s wife passed away in 2013 after prolonged illness. He has four daughters and a son
