India and Guyana sign ten agreements

India and Guyana have signed ten agreements to enhance cooperation in several areas including health, hydrocarbons, agriculture and allied sectors. The Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) were  signed on cooperation in the field of medical products, Janaushadhi scheme, Cultural Exchange Programme, deployment of UPI like system in Guyana and cooperation and collaboration in field of broadcasting between Prasar Bharati and National Communications Network, Guyana. 

Besides, MoU was also signed between National Defence Institute, Guyana and Rashtriya Raksha University, Gujarat. The agreements were signed between the two countries following the delegation level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President of Guyana, Dr. Mohammed Irfaan Ali at Georgetown yesterday evening.

In a joint statement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that India and Guyana agree that dialogue and diplomacy should be used to resolve all issues. He said, both the countries are unanimous that reform of global institutions is the need of the hour. Mr Modi said,  climate justice is a shared priority for both nations, and they will continue to strive for progress in all areas.

                                   

Prime Minister Modi said, the close cooperation in the field of defense between the two nations is a symbol of deep mutual trust. He informed that last year, India had supplied two Dornier aircraft to Guyana. Mr Modi highlighted that India is an important source of pharmaceutical products for Guyana and India will also work on setting up Jan Aushadhi Kendras in that country.

                                                       

Prime Minister Modi noted that Guyana is associated with various initiatives taken by India, such as the International Solar



Alliance, the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, and the Global Biofuel Alliance. He said, these collaborations will help both nations to strengthen their efforts towards a green and sustainable future globally.

     

President of Guyana, Dr. Mohammed Irfaan Ali said, the discussion held with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi was not only fruitful but also reinforced their shared commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and the collaboratively address regional and global concerns. He said, Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Guyana represents a significant milestone in enhancing cooperation between the two countries. He also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him a ‘champion among leaders’ for his impactful leadership and contribution to the developing world. He commended Mr Modi’s governance style, noting their relevance and adoption in Guyana and other nations.

                                                       

Later Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Irfaan Ali planted a sapling in Georgetown under the ‘Ek Ped Ma Ke Naam’ initiative.

Earlier, Mr Modi was accorded a Ceremonial Guard of honour at State House in Georgetown.

Prime Minister Modi reached Guyana yesterday on a three day visit to the country. In an unprecedented gesture, he was received at the airport by President Dr Mohammed Irfaan Ali, Prime Minister Mark Anthony Phillips and over a dozen Cabinet Ministers. Our correspondent reports that this is the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Guyana in 56 years.

Today, the Prime Minister will address the Parliament of Guyana. Mr Modi will also interact with prominent cricketers of Guyana and the Caribbean region. The Prime Minister is also scheduled to address a gathering of the Indian diaspora.
