A man who swallowed an entire Nokia 3310 cellphone underwent a life-saving surgery earlier this month.

The 33-year-old from Pristina in Kosovo swallowed an early 2000s model made by the former Finnish company. It was the model that came to be popularly known as the 'brick' phone after it was launched in the year 2000.

The phone became lodged in his stomach and he was rushed to a hospital, where Dr Skender Telaku was given the task of safely removing the device.

When the man underwent scans and tests, it was found that the phone was 'too large for him to digest' and was posing a threat to his life because of its corrosive battery that contained harmful chemicals.

Luckily for the man, the surgery lead by Taljaku went well and the phone was removed from the stomach.

Soon after the operation, Dr Teljaku shared photos of the phone on Facebook, and the X-Ray and endoscopy images while it was inside the man's

belly.

"I got a call about a patient who swallowed an object, and after carrying out a scan we noticed that the phone had split into three parts," Dr Talaku told local media in Kosovo.

"Out of all the parts, it was the battery that concerned us most because it could have potentially exploded in the man's stomach," he added.

Media reports said that the man went to the hospital in capital Pristina himself after suffering pain in his stomach. Dr Talaku said the man didn't reveal why he swallowed the phone. A clip recorded by a small camera shows the doctor and his team locating and removing the phone from the man's stomach. It took two hours to remove the device.

According to a case study from 2014, there are several cases of people swallowing mobile phones.

In 2016, a 29-year-old man swallowed his phone and it remained lodged in his stomach despite several hours of vomiting. He needed surgery for removing the device.
