Mumbai: Yakub Memon, convicted in the March 1993 serial blasts in Mumbai, is likely to be hanged on July 30 if his curative petition for mercy is rejected by the Supreme Court on July 21.
Over 250 people were killed while over 700 were injured in 13 serial blasts across the city on March 12. Properties worth Rs 27 crore were also damaged in the terror act.
Memon is the brother of Tiger Memon, a key accused in the serial blasts and a close aide of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.
Yakub Memon was given death sentence by a special
Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) court in July 2007 and the decision was upheld by the Supreme Court in March 2013.
The man’s mercy plea was also rejected by President Pranab Mukherjee in May 2014.
“Whatever we do will be made public at an appropriate time. Whatever directives will be given by the court, the Maharashtra government will act according to that. We will provide more information on this matter when the time is right,” State Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who is in New Delhi, said.
