New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe will hold the annual summit level talks in New Delhi today. Mr Abe arrived in New Delhi Friday on a three-day visit to India. The two leaders will review the implementation of various decisions taken during the past one year to enhance economic ties, particularly in the trade and investment sector. A 98,000 crore-rupee deal to build a bullet train network is also likely to be signed.
After the talks, Mr Abe will visit Varanasi and attend 'Ganga Aarti' at famous Dasaswamedh Ghat. The Prime Minister will accompany Mr Abe during the visit.
Welcoming Mr Abe, Mr Modi tweeted that the visit will provide new strength and vigour to Indo-Japan ties. Mr. Abe expressed hope that his meeting with Mr. Modi will further elevate Indo-Japan ties. He said, Japan and India share basic values and every field will be critically important for Asia and the world in this century.
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj called on Mr Abe soon after his arrival. During the meeting, Mr Abe expressed excitement for his third visit to India as the Prime Minister. He conveyed his heartfelt condolences for the loss of lives in the recent Chennai floods.
The Japanese Prime Minister was conferred with an honorary doctorate in International Relations by Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi Friday for Japan's role in India's economic development.
