Paris: The world conference on climate
change is beginning in Paris today. The aim of the twelve- day climate change
summit is to reach a landmark global deal on limiting greenhouse gas emissions.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Paris last night to attend the conference.
He will inaugurate the India pavilion today showcasing the country's harmony
with nature, environment and commitment to mitigate climate change. Mr Modi
will also jointly launch the India-mooted International Solar Alliance with
French President Francois Hollande today.
A large number of Head of States and
Governments along with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon are expected to be
present at the launch of the International Solar Alliance. Mr Modi would join
an estimated 150 Presidents, Prime Ministers and Head of States at the crucial
climate summit also known as Conference of Parties,CoP-21. During his visit, he
will also attend 'Mission Innovation' being hosted by US President Barack
Obama. Prior to his departure, the Prime Minister said in his monthly radio
programme 'Mann Ki Baat' that checking global warming
is everyone's
responsibility. His emphasis on the responsibility of all assumes significance
as the developed world is trying to place greater onus on developing nations
like India in the fight against climate change. India has been maintaining that
the developed countries have been the major polluters over centuries and should
assume greater role in fighting global warming by funding and transferring
low-cost technology to developing nations. In a tweet yesterday, Mr Modi said
that India will deliberate on crucial issues relating to environmental and
climate change. During the conference, India's 25-member delegation will focus
on Mr Modi's call for climate justice.
In total, 196 countries across the globe are participating in the summit. Paris climate conference will for the first time in over 20 years of UN negotiations, aim to achieve a legally binding universal agreement on climate, with the aim of keeping global warming below 2°C.
