Ahmedabad, February 21, 2015 (Agencies) The much talked-about monogrammed suit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi fetched a staggering Rs 4.31 crore at an auction in Surat. The pinstriped suit with Modi’s full name ‘Narendra Damodardas Modi’ embroidered all over the fabric was bought by Dharmanandan Diamonds Private Limited on the closing day of the three-day auction which began on Wednesday.
The suit — worn by the prime minister during his meeting with US President Barack Obama in January — went under the hammer on Wednesday, where the highest bid was Rs 1.21 crore. The price climbed steadily over the two days, with Surat-based Hitesh Patel making the highest bid of Rs 4.31 crore on Friday. The suit was gifted to Modi by NRI businessman Ramesh Kumar Virani. Apparently, the cost of the suit is Rs 10 lakh.
“Our aim was to get Modi’s suit at any cost and contribute the amount to the Clean Ganga mission,” said Hitesh
Patel, managing director, Dharmanandan Diamonds Private Limited.
While the proceeds of the auction received by sale of gifts to Modi will go to the Namami Gange (Clean Ganga) project, the money raised from Patel’s gifts will be used for the education of the girl child in the state through Mukhya Mantri Kanya Kelavani Nidhi.
Apart from the suit, the exhibition-cum-auction in Surat also saw various other items gifted to Modi during his visits abroad, such as a T-shirt from Australian cricketer Brett Lee, statues, show pieces and memento gifted by various NRIs. More than 826 gift items received by Modi and Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel were put on the block for auction.
“During his tenure as chief minister since October 2001, Modi’s gifts fetched almost Rs 90 crore for state exchequer. This is the first time as prime minister that Modi has given all the gifts to be put under the hammer,” a senior government official said.
