Mumbai: The Mumbai High Court today upheld Maharashtra government's ban on beef in the state. However, it has asked the state government not to take any "coercive steps" for enforcing the ban.
The High Court's order came in response to a petition that challenged ban on beef citing that
it was against the fundamental right of a person to choose his food.
Ban on beef came into force last month on March 4. The ban prohibits people from consuming and possessing beef. People violating the ban may be imprisoned for five years and fined Rs 10,000.
