Myanmar will see the opening of its new Parliament session today, dominated for this first time by Members of Parliament from Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy. The NLD won the November elections by a landslide, capturing 390 national parliamentary seats out of 664.
The country’s Union Solidarity and Development Party will be stepping aside, having only won 42 national parliamentary seats in the elections. Many expect more robust
debates in a house dominated by the incoming NLD. Expectations are also high because the new Parliament selects the country’s next President and two Vice Presidents.
A new political culture will emerge in the upcoming Parliament, as observers said this will be an opportunity for the NLD-led house to differentiate itself from the old Parliament.
Aung San Suu Kyi said, the new government will be the national reconciliation government.
