People will glimpse a rare celestial occurrence of Blue Moon tonight

Skywatchers will witness today a rare celestial occurrence called a 'Super Blue Moon'. This rare phenomenon also called "Blood Moon" refers to a view of the Moon during a total lunar eclipse. It happens when a full Moon is closest to the Earth, appearing bigger and brighter than normal. 

BM Birla Science Centre's Director, BG Sidharth said the lunar eclipse would be visible from India with the moon taking a red-brown glow, also called the "Blood Moon". The event would also bring about the Blue Moon and the Super Moon phenomena. 

He said that during the lunar eclipse, the earth comes exactly between the sun and the moon and the earth's shadow falls on the moon.If the three are almost exactly on the same line, we get a total lunar eclipse. He said, this would be the second full moon in the month and it would appear bigger and a



little brighter today which may bring slightly higher tides in rivers and seas but nothing very alarming. 

The Super Blueblood moon set to be visible today will see a combination of lunar events occurring together- blue moon, super moon, and super blue blood moon. The best view of this lunar spectacular can be had from western North America across the Pacific Ocean to East Asia. 

Other parts of the world, including Australia and Asia, will see it at night, as the moon comes up in the west. In India, this rare phenomenon begins at 5.20 this evening and stargazers can witness it from everywhere in the country. 

The main eclipse will start around 6.25 after sunset. It's the first total lunar eclipse since 2015 and the first Blue Moon Blood Moon visible from the U.S. since 1866.
