Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that India is the world’s fastest growing major economy and sustained growth needs energy security and sustainability.
Addressing the International Energy Agency’s Ministerial Meeting in Paris virtually, the Prime Minister said that in one decade, India became the 5th largest economy from the 11th largest and in the same period, country's solar energy capacity grew twenty six fold. Mr Modi also informed that country's renewable energy capacity has also doubled and India exceeded its Paris commitments in this regard, ahead of timelines.
In his address, the
Prime Minister said that India is running some of the world’s largest energy access initiatives and yet, our carbon emissions account for only four per cent of the global total. He said, however, India is firmly committed to combating climate change. Mr Modi said that India has already led initiatives such as the 'International Solar Alliance' and 'Mission LiFE' which focuses on pro-planet lifestyle choices for a collective impact. Mr Modi added that India’s G20 Presidency also saw significant action on this front and the launch of the 'Global Biofuels Alliance' was one of the highlights.
