Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Washington DC this morning after wrapping up his visit to the Belgian capital Brussels. He will participate in the Global Nuclear Security Summit beginning later today.
The two day Summit will be attended by the heads of about 50 countries and representatives of five international organisations. The Summit is to discuss a gamut of issues pertaining to nuclear security. It will highlight achievements and commitments of several countries towards safeguarding nuclear devices and technologies and reducing the threat of nuclear terrorism.
On the sidelines of nuclear summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold bilateral talks with his New Zealand counterpart John Key on several issues. Later, he will meet scientists from US-based
Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO). A memorandum of understanding on setting up LIGO facility in India will be signed between India and the United States on the occasion. The discovery of gravitational waves has been considered as the breakthrough of the current century.
Taking into view that Indian scientists were also part of the research on gravitational waves, -India has decided to set up state-of-the art- Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) project in the country in collaboration with the United States. The Observatory will be third of its kind after Hanford in Washington and Livingston, both in the US. India will sign an MoU with the US on setting up LIGO facility in the presence of Prime Minister in Washington.
