Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Buddha Jayanti celebrations at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi this afternoon. Buddha Purnima is celebrated today not only marks the day when Gautam Buddha was born but also when he attained enlightenment under the Mahabodhi tree at Bodh Gaya in Bihar and Parinirvana.
Besides Mr Modi, Culture Minister Dr Mahesh Sharma, Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju and International Buddhist Confederation (IBC) Secretary-General Dr Dhammapiya will also be present in the
function.
Yesterday, in his Mann Ki Baat programme on All India Radio, Mr Modi had said, Lord Buddha is the very synonym of the power of compassion, service and sacrifice, who guided millions of people around the world.
Meanwhile, all arrangements have been put in place for the two-day Buddha Jayanti being organised in the temple town of Bodh Gaya from today. The world heritage Mahabodhi Temple has been tastefully decorated and the security has also been tightened.
