Colombo, January 13, 2015 (Reuters) Pope Francis arrived in Sri Lanka on Tuesday at the start of a week-long Asian tour, aiming to bring a message of inter-religious and inter-ethnic harmony to Sri Lanka.
Francis descended the jet’s stairway in bright sunshine and received a garland from a girl at the bottom, where he was greeted by President Maithripala Sirisena and Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith. He proceeded to walk along red carpet and waved to onlookers.
Francis has a busy first day, including an airport arrival speech and a meeting with the country’s
bishops. The main event is an afternoon meeting with representatives of its major religious groups.
On Wednesday, Francis will canonise Sri Lanka’s first saint, the Rev. Joseph Vaz, a 17th century missionary credited with reviving the Catholic faith among both Sinhalese and Tamils. Later in the day, he flies into Tamil territory to pray at a shrine beloved by both Sinhalese and Tamil faithful.
After Sri Lanka, the Pope is due to visit the Philippines before leaving Asia on January 19.
