In yet another horrific assault on artists in Pakistan, famous singer Amjad Sabri was shot dead. The incident was reported from Karachi on Wednesday afternoon. Amjad was one-half of the world renowned Qawwali band ‘Sabri Brothers’.
According to local media reports, Amjad was attacked near Liaquatabad area of Karachi. Motorcycle-borne assailants chased his car and fired rounds at him through the car window.
Amjad was rushed to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital immediately after the attack. However, the bullet wounds had turned fatal by then. Doctors declared him dead on arrival.
According to eyewitnesses, Amjad was the target of the assailants who fired at the car. The
reason behind the assault is yet to be ascertained. Karachi police has launched a search operation to nab the shooters.
Along with Amjad, another person inside the car has been critically injured. However, his identity has not been revealed.
Amjad was the son of legendary Pakistani singer Ghulam Farid Sabri. Along with his brother, Ghaznavi Sabri, he formed the band of Sabri brothers which toured across the world.
His demise is a huge loss to Sufi music and its evolved form Qawwali. The attack highlights the insecure atmosphere in which the artists of Pakistan are living. Fundamentalist Islamist group have often criticised qawwals and sufi singers, calling them biddati (innovators).
