Kolkata: Sr. Nirmala Joshi, who served as the superior general of the Missionaries of Charity succeeding Mother Teresa, passed away on Tuesday in Kolkata. She was 81.
Sr. Nirmala was born in a Hindu family in Ranchi. She later converted into a Christian. She joined the Missionaries of Charity after her post graduation and served as a missionary in Panama for several years. She was elected
as the superior general of the order in 1997, six months before Mother Teresa died.
She declined a third term as the head of Missionaries of Charity in 2009 citing health issues. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday tweeted " Saddened at the passing of Sister Nirmala who headed Missionaries of Charity after Mother Teresa. Kolkata and the world will miss her."
