Kolkata: Trinamool Congress MLA Sohrab Ali was on Tuesday sentenced to two years’ imprisonment by a court in Asansol in a case of theft of railway property. This has triggered talks on his likely disqualification as a lawmaker.
The MLA from Raniganj in West Bengal has been found guilty under Railway Protection Act. The case dates back to 1995 when railway properties were recovered from his
premises.
Though constitutional experts said the MLA ceased to be a lawmaker with the two-year jail term, Mr Ali’s counsel said since the court had granted three months for filing an appeal, his client has not been disqualified.
Former Supreme Court Judge A. K. Ganguly and former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee said Mr Ali’s membership stood disqualified as per a Supreme Court order in 2013.
