Uttarakhand issue rocks Rajya Sabha

The Rajya Sabha witnessed repeated adjournments in its pre-lunch session today on the issue of imposition of President’s Rule in Uttarakhand with Opposition Congress demanding a discussion. The House was adjourned thrice till 2 PM amid slogan shouting by agitating Congress members against the government. 
Raising the issue, Anand Sharma of the Congress, said that his party has given a notice to take up discussion on the political developments in Uttarakhand. He said the government is not allowing discussion saying that the matter is sub judice. BSP leader Mayawati also demanded a discussion on Article 356 saying it



is being misused by various governments at the Centre. 
Leader of the House and Finance Minister Arun Jaintley said the real breakdown of Constitutional machinery in Uttarakhand was due to the decisions of the Presiding Officers to convert majority into minority and minority into majority. Earlier, Left members raised the developments in the Jawaharlal University demanding a discussion in the House. Prof. P J Kurien adjourned the House till Noon as noisy scenes continued. There was no change in the situation when it re-assembled at 1235 hours. Chairman Mohammed Hamid Ansari adjourned the House till 2 PM.
