Education Minister Smriti Irani strongly condemned the Afzal Guru
protest, saying: "The nation can never tolerate any insult to mother
India." Police presence on campus has upset students as well as JNU
professors, who said that the crackdown is inimical to freedom of speech.
Students protested outside the vice chancellor's office. Kanhaiya Kumar, the
president of the JNTU students' union and an activist of a Left-linked group,
was taken for questioning and then arrested this afternoon. He has been charged
with sedition and conspiracy. Education Minister Smriti Irani strongly
condemned the Afzal Guru protest, saying: "The nation can never tolerate
any insult to mother India." This is not the first time that JNTU, one of
the country's top academic institutions, has witnessed events in support of
Afzal Guru.
