'World AIDS Day is being observed
today. The day is dedicated to raise awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by
the spread of HIV infection, and mourning those who have died of the disease.
Government, health officials, non-governmental organizations and individuals
around the world observe the day, often with education on AIDS prevention and
control. The theme for this year is, 'Getting to zero, End Aids by
2030'.
Several awareness functions have been organised on this occasion. According to a latest global report by UN-AIDS, the number of people on life-saving anti-retroviral drugs has doubled since 2010, while incidents of new cases have fallen by 35 per cent since 2000.
